Canon: Land of the Lustrous, Canon Point: Episode 12 of the anime
Age: Roughly 2000
Background Information: Wiki Link
Personality: Outwardly Diamond is a caring and kind individual. They are selfless and do whatever it takes to help someone in need even if it means that they, themselves, will get hurt in the process. For this reason they are also known for being rather reckless and having little regard for their own personal safety. Even so other gems call them the gentle one and will seek them out for guidance.
They also love romance and the idea of love stories. As a captain of the manga points out: loves to talk about love. Which is exactly that. Diamond will often make assumptions about others and possible crushes they might have. Basically they will assume that one person is clearly in love with another person and go on about it. Some gems get annoyed about how they will take every opportunity to turn anything into a love story. And they love cute things. This includes people or animals and they will get very upset at the thought of having missed out on seeing something cute.
On the inside Diamond is very insecure. Their old fighting partner Bort is an extremely skilled and powerful fighter. Stronger, faster and just generally more skilled than Diamond. Bort can take a direct hit when Diamond cannot. Diamond desperately wants to be just as good if not better than them and will often push themselves to points way beyond their limit. They spend time going off on their own and developing fighting styles that actually hurt their body. They want to be better and will do whatever it takes to get this way. When one of the other gems is believed to have been turned into a slug, Diamond is the only one to try and seek out a way to help them. They will talk to everyone, including people others might be afraid of if it means succeeding in their task.
For this reason they have a personal strain in their relationship with Bort, someone they both love and desperately want make disappear. Later on this develops into resentment and complete dislike of the other Gem despite their complicated feelings. Out of all the other gems, Bort means the most to them, but their insecurity overshadows any of those feelings. Not to mention they are often berated for their reckless behavior and getting themselves into risky situations. Diamond wants to desperately prove themselves to be better and not feel so inferior. As they tell another one of the other gems, Phos, 'a weak diamond is no diamond at all.' Though their body is strong it shatters so easily. If they aren't good at fighting, and they break with impact what use are they to the world?
When Diamond and Bort split as partners (as Bort decided to team up with others), Diamond got to see just how much the other gem meant to them as the separation hurt them greatly. This also feeds into the resentment later as they were pretty much abandoned by someone they cared about. That resentment turned from wishing the other wasn't around to wanting to destroy that person personally. They fear forever being stuck in the shadows of those considered more powerful. Their insecurity over what happens and their inability to fight well (in their own mind if they aren't as good as Bort then what is the point) is shown when Diamond struggles against a giant lunarian that breaks into the school, at first choosing to hide. As there was no one around to save them, Diamond was forced to overcome their insecurities, and though they ended up badly broken they were able to strike a powerful blow.
Diamond's relationship with the other gems is generally rather friendly. They don't dislike anyone and will get along with most. (A lot of gems make note not to bring up their relationship with Bort due to Diamond being rather sensitive about it). This also extends to animals (though there aren't many around where they come from). They won't hurt anything that's not trying to hurt them first. With their sensei-Kongo, it's more that of adoration, though that is something common among the gems. They pretty much all love Kongo.
Later on when Diamond discovers a different type of skill they are good at (singing) they develop an ego and it all goes to their head after so many years of trying to prove themselves. They demand attention and believe everyone should adore and look up to them no matter what. They turn from being helpful to only caring about themselves and what will personally affect them. Singing for their fans becomes the top priority. Diamond basically becomes a diva. And not a very nice one. They will berate their fans for not cheering or loving them enough. Fortunately they are coming in long before this point, but the chance of having an ego is still there.
Abilities & Inventory: Diamond is essentially immortal in the sense that there is no real normal means to kill them. They can be shattered, ground up into dust, but as long as all the pieces are (mostly) still there they can be put back together and be perfectly fine. It does hurt them to be broken, but it's not really the same as a human getting a broken bone. It's a less intense thing. They can also live perfectly fine losing a limb or pieces of themselves, however, this also can result in memory loss. There are tiny organisms in their body called inclusions that give them the ability to move and also hold their memories. So the more they lose, the more of themselves is lost as well. Missing parts can be replaced similar materials if the inclusions decide to accept that part (such as another diamond piece).
They also don't really feel heat or cold the same way as other creatures. They do understand the concept behind it, but they won't get hot in the sun or cold in the winter.
As far as regular skills go, Diamond can jump very high, run up the sides of walls, and move with above-human-average speed. Anything else is limited by their body, they can't take direct hits very well as they will break under impact.
They also rather skilled with a katana, not perfect by any means but they can certainly hold their own.
Items: Obsidian-bladed katana with sheath and the clothing on their back.
Suitability & Plans: Diamond has lived a rather sheltered life and has limited knowledge about anything outside of where they come from. Everything they know comes from a singular person who taught them language and about the world, but that's only a fraction of what's out there. Diamond will have a chance to learn about completely new ideas and aspects of life that have never come out before and hopefully grow as a person.
